People, Don't Be A Sheeple

The problem with our lives today is in our heads. We have too much noise coming in and very little production coming from between our ears. We use a fraction of our brains, and instead of stimulating our minds with introspection, conversation, reading or learning we numb it with mindless activities; tv watching, surfing the web on our phones, social media addictions, and whatever we can listen to or watch that will keep our minds distracted and on auto pilot. We avoid quiet down time that was prevalent in lives just a few decades ago and promoted reflection and deeper thinking, the gateway to understand ourselves and how we view the world around us.

Today our over stimulated and numb minds, coupled with lifestyles that cater to instant gratification and instant information has changed the way many people think. Or rather, don't think. As a society we aren't taught to analyze and comprehend or think independently, but to group think at school and accept what is taught, not to question or reason with what is being presented. This creates laziness. We want someone to do the thinking for us, and we'll just agree with what their conclusion. This isn't the mantra of independent people, it's that of sheeple.

We have lost one of the most important skills in life.

Critical thinking.

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding the logical connection between ideas. It is also described as the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. It is not the accumulation of facts and knowledge or something that you can learn once and then use in that form forever, such as the nine times table you learn and use in school.

Someone with critical thinking skills can:

  • Understand the links between ideas.

  • Determine the importance and relevance of arguments and ideas.

  • Recognize, build and appraise arguments.

  • Identify inconsistencies and errors in reasoning.

  • Approach problems in a consistent and systematic way.

  • Reflect on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs and values.

This is absolutely key to children growing up to function proficiently and independently as adults. And as adults it's necessary to make good sound decisions in life that can determine the trajectory of their life.

This applies to everything, including financial information and advice. Don't take people's word for it, go read, learn and come to a conclusion about what you think is true and best for you.
